Susan Komen Race for the Cure

According to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, an estimated 230,480 women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2011 and 39,520 women will die from the disease this year. Team JALBCA participated in its first Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in 1993 and has participated every year since then. Each year that Team JALBCA participates, it raises money that goes directly to the Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure in hopes that next year fewer women will die from this disease.
Some members of Team JALBCA run because they are survivors of breast cancer and they want to find a cure for the disease they have battled. Like all members of JALBCA, they want to eliminate the disease for the benefit of future generations of women. Many members of Team JALBCA race to support a loved one or friend stricken by breast cancer. Not every member of Team JALBCA has been touched directly by breast cancer. Some participate every year because they understand the importance of showing support for women’s causes. They have learned that numbers get noticed and want to be counted among the many that give up their personal time for this cause.
Sandra Lespinasse, Team JALBCA’s co-captain, describes the Race as “… truly an inspirational day which brings hope to breast cancer survivors and their loved ones.” She began participating in 2004 when the Honorable Shirley Werner Kornreich asked her to join Team JALBCA and to recruit individuals from the Bronx courthouses to join the Team’s efforts. She was especially grateful when Justice Kornreich asked her to be her co-captain in 2010. Co-captain Lespinasse notes: “For the past seven years, I have been privileged to be a part of this movement to eradicate this disease and find a cure.”
